What is the Feria de las Flores?

The Feria de las Flores (Festival of Flowers) is held every August in Medellín. This week-long event showcases the city’s rich cultural heritage and its deep connection to the region's floral industry. The festival features an array of activities, including concerts, parades, exhibitions, and, of course, the stunning flower displays.

Who are the Silleteros?

The Silleteros are the heart and soul of the Feria de las Flores. These skilled artisans are flower growers from the nearby town of Santa Elena, known for their remarkable ability to create elaborate flower arrangements, or "silletas." Historically, these arrangements were carried on their backs to the markets, a tradition that dates back to the 19th century.

Today, the Silleteros are celebrated for their artistic creations, which they proudly display during the festival’s main event, the Desfile de Silleteros (Silleteros Parade). This parade is a highlight of the Feria de las Flores, attracting thousands of spectators who come to admire the breathtaking floral arrangements.

The Desfile de Silleteros

The Desfile de Silleteros is a colorful and lively parade that takes place on the final day of the Feria de las Flores. During the parade, the Silleteros carry their elaborate silletas on their backs through the streets of Medellín. These silletas can weigh up to 150 kilograms and are adorned with intricate designs made from a variety of flowers, each telling a unique story or representing a significant theme.

The parade is divided into different categories, including traditional, emblematic, commercial, and monumental silletas. Each category showcases the creativity and craftsmanship of the Silleteros, with judges awarding prizes for the most outstanding displays.

My Experience at the Feria de las Flores

Attending the Feria de las Flores was an unforgettable experience. The streets of Medellín were alive with vibrant colors, music, and the intoxicating scent of fresh flowers. I was fortunate enough to meet several Silleteros and learn about their craft and the immense pride they take in their work.

Walking through the festival, I marveled at the stunning silletas, each more impressive than the last. The dedication and effort that goes into creating these floral masterpieces are truly remarkable. The highlight, of course, was the Desfile de Silleteros, where I joined thousands of spectators in cheering on the Silleteros as they paraded through the city with their magnificent flower displays.
